The Parakeet, the Mermaid and the Snail

Monsieur Matisse is a painter with the sun in his tummy. His colours make everyone happy. But one day he falls ill. When Monsieur Matisse wakes up after a major operation in a white room, he misses his colours.
‘Bring my brushes! Bring my paint!’
But the sheets aren’t smooth and taut like canvas. And the walls and ceiling are too far away. What to do now?

‘Van Haeringen’s own smooth lines are a perfect fit and likewise to Matisse’s work, the white background of the paper is part of the illustrations. She lets the joyful and sparkling colours whirl over the pages in an apparently nonchalant way, but in a composition she definitely thought of very well.’ – De Standaard
