Who doesn’t know the famous stories from Homer’s Odyssey, in which the Greek hero Odysseus has mythical adventures on his way back to his homeland of Ithaca. Daan Remmerts de Vries has retold these stories in a way that will appeal to children, without losing the essence of Odysseus’ encounters and the lessons he learns from them. The Odyssey has never before been adapted so accessibly for young children. And of course, the Cyclops, Calypso, Circe and the Sirens all make an appearance in the book.
Each story is illustrated by a different renowned Dutch illustrator. A unique picture book, in both word and image.
Illustrated by Charlotte Dematons, Annette Fienieg, Piet Grobler, Annemarie van Haeringen, Alice Hoogstad, Philip Hopman, Mies van Hout, Jan Jutte, Martijn van der Linden, Georgien Overwater, Daan Remmerts de Vries, Ingrid & Dieter Schubert, Noëlle Smit, Harmen van Straaten, Thé Tjong-Khing, Marije Tolman, Fleur van der Weel and Sylvia Weve.
‘The Adventures of Odysseus is not only beautiful in its design and layout, it is, above all, exceptional thanks to the combination of text and illustrations. The text is concise and to the point; the narrator is boldly contemporary and addresses the young reader directly. The associative and also witty tone of the text is maintained throughout the book and the illustrations complement this perfectly. The pictures all fit together; they have a certain immediacy, and capture the essence of the stories they accompany.’ – Jury Silver Pencil 2016
