Worldwide, 80 million people are currently displaced from their homes. Such astonishing figures overshadow the faces behind the numbers. So, when Annemarie van Haeringen was asked to illustrate Sjoerd Kuyper’s poem ‘People with Suitcases’, she chose to show these faces through twelve portraits. As the saying goes, ‘when a person dies, a world dies’. She painted the refugees’ faces, but if you look closely, you can also see the world inside their heads.
