Ella and her friends are ordinary girls. They love their phones, worry about school, and occasionally argue. But the holidays are different. That’s when they go to Birch Tree Farm, a special place that offers a home to animals with nowhere else to go. Ella’s favourite horse, Kicker, lives there too. The girls are looking forward to fun at the farm with Claudine and the animals, but things take a curious turn one morning when Ella finds an injured chicken on the doorstep. Who left it there? Did it come from Farmer Hugo’s chicken farm? And what does the boy who was creeping round the farm recently have to do with it? When the farm cash register disappears along with the takings and the village policeman knocks on the door one night, the friends put on their detective hats. Because one thing is clear, if the money doesn’t turn up both the animals and Birch Tree Farm are in danger…
