White Raven 2015
Since the father of thirteen-year-old Arnold left the house after a big fight, his mother is not leaving her bed. Arnold has to take care of her. Every day he hopes to find a letter from his father, as he promised, but there is never one.
The young postman Sjon stops at Arnold’s house almost every day for some coffee and conversation, and he tries to build a friendship with Arnold, but Arnold is rather reserved. Much in this relationship is hinted at rather than directly explained in the text. Arnold’s memories of happier times in the past are touching and form a strong contrast with the boy’s present circumstances.
The book presents an intriguing story about friendship, trust and family, told from the perspective of a teenager, with a hopeful ending. Sanne Parlevliet made her debut in 2008 and a year later received a grant for promising new authors. With this novel, she proves that she has met expectations.
