I’m Right Here (Koko ni iru yo)

English translation available

A boy’s cat has passed away. Each morning, he wakes up to find the cat still gone. He eats breakfast alone. He calls the cat, who always came before, but still no cat comes. Until… with the turn of a translucent apge, a whispered reply seems to appear: ‘Here I am.’

This charming picture book from the Japanese author and illustrator Shizuka is the story of a boy coming to terms with the loss of his cat born out of Shizuka’s own experience. The story unfolds through simple, yet profoundly moving words of loneliness, sadness and ultimately reassurance, encouragement and love. Spare illustrations of the boy – and all the unforgettable memories of the cat he lost – are brought to life through the ingenious use of paper and printing, the reader can intuitively relive the emotional movements that boy is felt through this book.

A story of healing and rebirth for those grieving the loss of a loved one.
