Elephant’s Island

The Times Children’s Book of the Week (UK)
Picture Book finalist, Teach Early Years Awards 2022 (UK)

After a storm at sea, Elephant is washed up on an island. He calls for help, and look, here comes Mouse, sailing towards him. Mouse lets Elephant come aboard, but the boat is far too small and breaks under the weight. Dog and Crocodile cannot save the shipwrecked duo, either.
So they all stay on the island. It is going to be so much fun…

Press on Elephant’s Island:

‘In yet another triumphant experiment for the award-winning Timmers, his medium – here different kinds of sponges, razor blades ad paint rollers to create different kinds of textures – is the quintessential embodiment of his message: “The magic of happy accidents.”‘ – New York Times

‘This light-tension, winking tale of a makeshift homecoming is sure to delight audiences at story time. Its mixed-media illustrations evoke stop-motion films; the animals’ stiff, bewildered looks are humorous, and the colors and clever details are electrifying.’ – Foreward Reviews, starred review

‘A picture book tribute to the power of collective, constructive play, and to heeding the call of freedom.’ – Publishers Weekly

‘Timmers combined all his pictorial and narrative qualities, which undeniably makes this picture book one of his best.’ – NRC Handelsblad

‘The book becomes progressively more exuberant and humorous, the visual creativity greater.’ – Trouw

‘A precious gem with a sparkling soul at its centre. A soul that couples narrative inventiveness to visual ingenuity, technical mastery and deeply human warmth.’ – Bruzz
